Quite simply, teleposts are adjustable steel posts supporting the main beam of a house, which in turn supports the main floor via floor joists.
These teleposts are usually supported by concrete pads under the basement floor, which are at the same depth as the exterior foundation wall footings. These teleposts need to be adjusted under the following circumstances to keep the main beam level:
- Differential moisture levels between the exterior footings of the house and the telepost pad.
Result: uneven pressure and movement on the main beam. - Shrinking or swelling soil on the exterior foundation.
Result: cracked drywall, sticking doors, ceiling damage, etc.
