We install window wells surrounding below grade-level basement windows for the purpose of preventing the surrounding clay, top soil or rock from filling the pit adjacent to the window.
The window well does not prevent water from entering the pit and does not need to be attached to the foundation wall. The pit at the window is drained to the weeping tile at the bottom of the foundation. Good drainage is critical; otherwise the pit will fill with water and leak into the basement mainly where the concrete wall and the window meet. Essentially, this solution deters rot and leaks by diverting excess rain or snow melt away from your windows.
